Crafting Joy: DIY Flirt Poles for Happy Pups

Got a lively pup or adult dog with energy to spare? A flirt pole might be the answer! Quick and easy to make, this toy is a hit, especially with breeds that have a natural chase drive like sighthounds, collies and terriers.

Now, if your pup gets a bit too caught up in the excitement and has trouble hitting the pause button, we've got a tip for you: ease into the engagement gradually. Make sure your furry friend is warmed up with a brisk walk before diving into the fun. To cool down, consider engaging them in a gentle wind-down.

Materials You'll Need:

*You can also have your local hardware store help with these

Building Your Flirt Pole:

  • Using the coping saw (or requesting this in-store), cut the PVC rod to a size between 65 cm and 85 cm, depending on your dog's size.
  • Cut a length of rope to match the pole's size plus an additional 40cm.
  • Thread the rope through the pole until it peeks out the other end. Tie a secure knot to keep it in place.
  • Tie the excess rope around your dog's toy, ensuring a snug fit. Now, your toy is attached and ready to swing freely.

Playing with Your Flirt Pole:

Before getting into the flirt pole action, it helps to make sure your dog has a “drop,” “leave it” or other “release” command to disengage with the toy. Once they've mastered that command, you're good to go!

For safety and space, take the flirt pole outdoors for a spin.

When you’re ready and comfortable, follow these steps:

  • Ask your pup to sit as you position yourself with the flirt pole.
  • Cast the toy away from you, as if you're casting a fishing line, landing it opposite to where your pup is sitting.
  • Twist and turn the pole, trailing the toy along the ground. Keep it playful and positive!
  • Resist the temptation to hold the toy high (especially at first) – this could lead to jumping and potential joint issues.
  • Let your dog catch the toy regularly, allowing time for play before asking them to 'leave.' Restart the game when they're ready.

Benefits of a Flirt Pole

This simple yet effective device offers numerous advantages in canine enrichment and training. Firstly, it provides an outlet for dogs to engage in instinctual behaviours like chasing, jumping, and catching, helping to fulfill their need for physical and mental stimulation. Regular use of a flirt pole can help improve a dog’s agility, coordination and overall fitness level contributing to their overall health and well-being. Moreover, it serves as an excellent tool for obedience training, teaching dogs impulse control, focus and responsiveness to commands in a fun and interactive way. Lastly, a flirt pole can strengthen the bond between dog and owner as it fosters positive interaction and reinforces trust and communication. With its simplicity and effectiveness, the flirt pole stands out as a valuable addition to any dog owner’s toolkit, promoting both physical exercise and mental engagement.
